The Truth About Social Influence And How It’s Affecting Your Success

For good or bad, we influence each other. Social Influence and Success

If someone close to you becomes obese, your chances of becoming obese go up. If you hang around those who exercise and stay fit, you’re more likely to do so too.

Habits such as eating and exercise can be contagious. So can others, like kindness, flossing and reading.

Which is why your social circle can influence your lifestyle and your results.

Your Circle of Influence

While “social” may imply friends and family, it also includes those you work with.

Social circles can also influence the level of positivity or negativity in your life. There are those who go about life improving themselves and taking action, and others who like complacency and/or negative behaviors like drama or a victim-type attitude.

While we may not always be able to choose who’s around us, we can choose who we spend time or connect with.

It works the other way too. What you do influences your others as well. You can do your best to be a positive influence, or you can express your negative habits and drag others down with you (for ex, smoking).

It’s not that you, or anyone else, is perfect, but you can aim to maximize your positive and minimize your negative. It’s not just about you (or me).

Your Influence At Work

As an employer, I cannot tell my employees to eat healthy or exercise. But, I can be encouraging (and in fact, I am)…not for the benefit of my business but because I genuinely believe in their importance. Similarly, I can stick to my own ideals and be an example.

The same applies if there’s gossip, or a potential conflict. Boss or not, you can always aim higher and diffuse negative behaviors by declining to participate or refusing to add fuel to prevent them from escalating.

In my younger days, I was more eager to fit in and played a part in such scenarios. But over the years I’ve realized this does nothing except make a few people feel temporarily better about themselves (usually by putting others down). Now, if faced with it, I focus on diffusing and offering a solution. When the train loses steam, it can’t go full speed.

Making your work environment (or allowing it to be) more negative serves no one. This is why it’s not just skills you hire for, but also character.

It’s All In Who You Know

Since influence works both ways, who you surround yourself with should be an intelligent as well as intentional consideration. Don’t get dragged down by those with low standards. If you operate on default, that’s where you will stay (or decline).

If you deliberately choose to be around positive influencers, you will see a positive shift in your life. I’ve experienced this many times in my own life.

This shift spread into other areas of life. It helps you discover strengths you didn’t know you possessed. Moreover, as you continue, you will most likely have a positive impact on others and inspire them to do the same. This is good energy, and you’re helping it grow.

The point here is that we’re all in it together.

Let’s amp up our good energy, and use our influence to let it spread.
